Week 11, Class Highlights

Aha Moments

Chapter 5
; I learn in the Magazine chapter that comic book were categorized as magazines which I though surprising.

Chapter 7 ; I learned that when music is played on the radio only songwriters and publishers get compensation not the artists which I though was interesting.

Chapter 10; What useful information that I learned was who created the internet who is Tim Berners-Lee which he didn't get any money. To think something so commonly used would be making billions had it been created with a fee.

week 9; Propaganda in Advertising/PR

Bandwagon Join the crowd: This technique reinforces people's natural desire to be on the winning side. This technique is used to convince the audience that a program is an expression of an irresistible mass movement and that it is in their best interest to join.
In the commercial we see how burger King says we make our burgers the way you want it so join the winning side and pick us, which is a clear example of bandwagon
Ad Hominem
A Latin phrase which has come to mean attacking your opponent, as opposed to attacking their arguments.
In the commercial we see how Burger king says Mc Donalds doesn't make your burger your way but their way and they grill it your way the way you want it.

Week 8; Electronic News

CBS Evening News

Lead Story: 9/11 attackers/terrorists go to trial - approx. 6 min 30 sec

I think they choses this story because of how wide of intreats range this is to a lot of Americans. And also because 911 is a on going stori that still has many sides yet to play out.

Tone: The way I saw it, it felt that the anchors we just showing clips of other peoples ideas. They themselves didn't say their own views just presented others. They showed victims of 911 attacks spouses and how they felt about moving a trill to New York and then they just showed the other side and how the trial may backfire in New York because of baises and the torture tactics used against them during there imprisonment.

Week 7: Internet

When I searched "social working websites" on wikipedia I found over 12,401 sites. Some of the sites listed that I was familiar with were facebook, myspace, and livejournal. There are a ton of other social working websites that I am unfamiliar also. There is a site called Farmville which allows its users to create farms in which they to manage a virtual farm by planting, growing and harvesting virtual crops, trees, and livestock. Along with their own farm, players can invite their friends to join and be neighbors. Acquiring neighbors has benefits in gameplay — not only can one earn money and experience (by visiting and helping on neighboring farms), but with eight or more neighbors, a player can expand and own more land. I primarily use myspace and I remember losing my cell phone and how my myspace helped me keep contact with people who I really need to get a hold of.

Week 5: Movies

9

My favorite movie of 2009 is a movie called 9. I was able to see it October 20, 2009 in theaters. I like the movie for its story line. Its about this creature that wakes up and finds that humanity has died and the machines that they created took over the world. I like how its a parallel to issues today with the argument that does technology help up or is it hurting us in the long run. I also love the animation it was really good.

Week 3: Books

1. Harry Potter series, By: J.K. Rowling
Link
This book really influenced me, as a child it really got me to start reading which has become a real big part of me. Without this book I don't believe that I'd be the casual reader that I am today.

2. Why men love bitches, By: Sherry Argov
Link
This book really changed the way I though of being in a relationship. It taught me that you deserve the best of life, never put a low value on yourself and settle for less then what you deserve. I would still be a push over if I had never read this book.

3. Into the wild, By:
Jon Krakauer
Link
This book was really influential to me for no other fact then I have always remember it. After reading this book I can still remember how I cried and felt an uplift of happiness at the same time. To me it will be a story I can't forget.

Week 2: Media Impact

How Television effects a society.

I propose to see the effects of television on a society. I will be studying two types of society, one based on television exposure and one that has not been exposed to television. A westernized community vs. an Amish community. I will test for differences mainly in behavioral patterns. Using random sampling from each individual group. I will look at the history to current files of violence in each society and use that as a control. Then expose the westernized society to violent television programming during a period of two years and see with the exposure if violence in that society has increased or decreased or stayed the same. I predict that with violent television exposure there will be a slight increase in violent behavior with in the westernized society versus the Amish society because of the individual difference theory.

Media Autobiography

I never really noticed how much of my life has been exposed to all kinds of media even from day one. When I was younger I can still remember watching TV. Sitting In the car with my mom and we’d be singing songs along with the radio. Looking back now I can definitely see that a lot of my childhood was shaped loosely by what the media portrayed.

I love reading books. I can definitely say that books are my most favorite types of media. Through out the years of my life, I’ve gotten so many books from garage sales, book stores, people that I’ve created my own life library. The idea that a person can create a story to teach a lesson or just to write a story to captivate our imagination always amazes me. Through out my young and now adult life I’ve always carried a good book with me.

With television as a young child I remember always watching it after school. Now that I’ve gotten older I chose not to watch it so much. Solely for the purpose that I believe that the media in TV is very one sided. When I say one sided I mean it in a sense that the media makes people feel that they need to look a certain way or buy certain products to be accepted in society.

Recordings and newspapers were never really in my life. My parents came from the Philippines so anything that wasn’t visual images and had too many words really wasn’t a necessity to look into. As I’ve gotten older I feel that the newspaper is a dead technology I mainly use it for the funnies.

I love watching movies. Movies to me are like books. There are so many different movies that are visually stimulating. I really love anything dealing with a story.

The internet to me is probably mostly used mainly for reference or school work. To me the internet is just a jumble of information in a big box. The one this I dislike and like about it is the fact that anyone can put there own ideas whether true or completely false.

The Radio and with magazines have been parallel with my life never really important influences though. I feel that they never really change much but just in the fact how commercialized they are and how much mainstream influence they have.
